ATKINSON, Frank Sergeant 10942 2nd Btn DLI
Yarm1914 believe that Frank was born in Eaglescliffe in 1895 to Thomas aged 30 and Florence aged 30. Florence Elizabeth Leggett from Lowestoft had married Thomas, a signalman in Stockton in 1885. By 1901 the Atkinsons had 9 children, Annie 14, Thomas 12, Herbert 10, Edith 9, Frank 6, Elizabeth 4, Marjory 3, John 1 and William had just been born. By 1911 Thomas had moved to 17 Newlands Road in Egglescliffe and John was a labourer in Whinstones quarry working above ground. Frank signed up in 1910 to the DLI claiming to be a gardner from Eaglescliffe aged 18.The second batallion of the regular army landed at St Nazire in France on 10 September 1914. Frank was killed in action on 9 Aug 1915 and recorded his father Thomas as his next of kin.
